In keeping with its reputation as a school with high standards, St. Scholastica’s College continues to preserve its prestigious image as evidenced by its receiving the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities’ (PAASCU) reaccredidation status with the College enjoying Level III, the highest level of accreditation. SSC was first accredited in 1957, the College Unit has since been re-accredited six (6) times (1960, 1967, 1974, 1981, 1987 and 1994). Of the late (2001), it was granted full autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The College Community TodayThe College Unit is first and foremost an important member of SSC's academic community whose primary goal is to offer a liberal arts education where students learn habits of thought and a broader understanding of the interrelatedness of all knowledge. The College Unit commits itself to providing an atmosphere conducive to learning characterized by academic freedom, intellectual and artistic stimulation and open and congenial Interpersonal relationships. In line with its commitment to maintaining academic excellence, the College Unit facilitates and monitors innovative teaching strategies and encourages interdisciplinary approaches to learning. Student centered activities are emphasized to allow for students' individual differences and to enable them to become active and lifelong learners. Qualified, dedicated, and effective administrators, faculty members and school personnel provide the necessary support in achieving and sustaining the various goals and objectives of the college. Facilities and resources supportive of the academic programs are well maintained and regularly updated to answer the needs of current educational requirements and rapid technological changes. The College Unit maintains an undergraduate enrollment of about 2,600 students. A great number of students are women with only a few men coming from the Fine Arts and Music concentrations. As a school committed to providing education of the highest quality, it grants the Bachelor of Arts degree in six (6) major fields, the Bachelor of Fine Arts in three (3) major fields, the Bachelor of Science degree in four (4) major fields, the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Music major in Music Education degrees in five (5) and three (3) major fields respectively and the Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree In nine (9) major fields. Other academic programs are available such as the five-year, two-degree program and the program for gifted students. The College Unit's various undergraduate curricula are designed to ensure that graduates are not only proficient in their chosen fields but are also liberally educated and prepared for continual learning. Each degree offering encourages students to develop their creative and intellectual skills, understand the investigative methods of the major disciplines, become transmitters of Christian values and realize the significance of belonging to society's larger communities. Students are encouraged to fulfill their responsibility of bringing political, cultural and social benefits to society. Students enrolled In the College Unit come from diverse economic, geographic and educational backgrounds. Committed to providing an academic environment that fosters community life, the College values each student as an individual with unique abilities and potentials and encourages the development of mutual respect among administrators, faculty, staff and students. St. Scholastica's College is a member of the South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium (SMIC) which Includes four (4) other educational institutions namely, De La Salle University, Philippine Christian University, Philippine Normal University and St. Paul College, Manila. The consortium offers opportunities for credit by examination and cross-registration and the sharing of library resources. Various SMIC committees have also been formed to allow for faculty sharing along the areas of research, support services and student activities. The College Unit today offers rich and varied opportunities for learning marked by a balance between career preparation and liberal education. Students are made to realize that future success is grounded on Integrity, self-discipline, spiritual strength and continual learning. |
