St. Scholastica’s College (SSC) has committed itself towards realizing its social orientation while maintaining high academic standards.  Through its thrust, “Education for Justice and Social Transformation” SSC continues to develop its academic and co-curricular programs by heightening the students’ social awareness.

This is concretized by the College Unit through its LAY APOSTOLATE (LA) PROGRAM.  Established in 1952 and known then as the Social Services Program, it was renamed Lay Apostolate Program in 1965.  In its early years, the activity was centered on catechetical

“SSC is dedicated to the task of enabling her students to become Scholasticans critically aware of present realities, particularly social injustice, gender inequality and environmental crisis.”

instruction to public school students.  With its expansionin 1969 to different non-government organizations (NGOs) and private agencies, various services such as baby care and feeding, tutorial to street children and public school students, home visitation, among others were offered.

The LA Program creates avenues where students can deepened their awareness on contemporary social issues through direct interaction and service to the marginalized sectors of society.

The LA Program is a four (4) unit required course namely LA 1 and LA 2 taken by students in their second year.

Objectives

At the end of the LA Program, the students are expected to:

1.      Demonstrate a heightened sense of awareness of the plight of the poor and the marginalized.

2.      Respond to the call for social transformation through concrete services to various NGOs and public elementary schools.

3.      Manifest LOVE for God and country through commitment to empower the poor and marginalized sectors of society.
