St. Scholastica's College belongs to three consortia; the South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium (SM-IC), the Consortium of Women Colleges (CWC) and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines - National Capital Region, Tertiary Commission (CEAP-­NCR).  As a member of these consortia, students of St. Scholastica's College have access to the library collections of the consortium member schools.

The presence of the internet in the College Library enables the students to have access to the world's research facilities. 

The College Library provides information resources and services to support the instruction, research and extension programs of the College.

The collection includes foreign and local books and periodicals in print, microform, and electronic formats and maintains a collection of newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets and
maps relevant to the academic programs of the College.  It provides access to the special collection of musical scores, CDs of the Music Library and the audio-visual materials located in the Audio-Visual Center (AVC) of SSC.

The library’s services include reference or information assistance, instruction in the use of both print and electronic library resources in locating information, preparing bibliographies on special topics upon request by faculty members, and current awareness services for faculty and administrators to assist them in identifying and locating current materials in their areas of specialization.

Location

The College Library is on the second floor of the St. Mechtild and the Sta. Maria  buildings. 

The Sta. Maria wing houses the Reference Section, the Graduate Library, the Periodicals Section, the Computer Room, and the Discussion Room.

The St. Mechtild wing houses the Circulation Section,  which includes books that may be checked out from the library for a period of one week such as those in the General Collection and those belonging to the following special collections:  Filipiniana,  Women’s Studies, St. Benedict and Best Sellers.  It also houses the Reserve Books Section and the Theses Collection which can be found inside the Circulation Counter.

Library Resources

  Computer Room - This room contains computers for accessing the Internet, networked CDs, the Internet and online databases for use by administrators, faculty, students and staff of St. Scholastica’s College.  Two (2) printers service the computers.  A member of the library staff is assigned to this room to assist users and provide instruction in the use of the computers on how to access the Internet and the CD and online databases.

  Discussion Room - This is a venue for students to discuss group research projects so they develop critical analysis and learn to share ideas.  Each group is allowed to use this room for one hour only but may be granted an extension if there are no other requests.  Reservations for the use of this room should be made with the library clerk at the door.

  General Collection - Refers to books on all subjects, except those belonging to the special collections, which may be checked out from the library.

  Graduate Library - This library is for the exclusive use of students registered in the graduate program.  Graduate students may check out no more than five books per week, renewable if nobody else requests for the same titles.

      Undergraduate students may use this library only at the request of their professor and the approval of the College Librarian.  They can check out only one book.

  Map Collection - The library maintains a collection of local and foreign maps which can be borrowed for classroom use by faculty members.   Interested users are asked to inform the Reference Librarian what maps they need.

  Periodical Section - Periodicals include newspapers, magazines and professional journals in print, microform, and electronic formats.  Current issues of selected periodicals magazines and journals of print copies are arranged are arranged alphabetically by titles on shelves.  Back issues of local newspapers are available on microfilm, while some selected journals are available on microfiche.  Microreader/printers are provided in this section for reading and printing the articles from this collection.

       Indexes to newspaper, magazine and journal articles help users identify and locate the articles they need.  The library has the following indexes in print and CD format for this purpose:  1)   the SM-IC Article Database which indexes the periodical collections of the five libraries participating in the South Manila Inter-institutional Consortium;  2) the Computerized Index to Philippine Periodicals (CIPPA); 3) the Index to Philippine Periodicals.

       The library also subscribes to an online periodicals database which gives the citation, abstract, and full text of the articles in over 3,000 selected foreign journals.

       Periodicals do not circulate because they are hard to replace.  A photocopier and printers are provided for those who need copies of articles.

  Reference Section - This section contains the library’s collection of reference books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, almanacs, bibliographies, yearbooks, atlases, and maps.  The books in the reference collection are for home use only.  The information found in reference books are organized for quick and easy use, arranged in an alphabetical or chronological arrangement or by the use of detailed indexes and cross references.  They are intended to be referred to for pieces of information, not to be read from beginning to end.

Special Collections:

  Filipiniana Collection Consists of books about the Philippines and its people, written or published by Filipinos.  Filipiniana titles whose arrangement and treatment of information and use are similar to that of reference books and do not circulate are kept in the Reference Section in the Sta. Maria Wing.  Filipiniana periodical titles are also kept in the Periodicals Section.

  Women’s Studies Collection A special collection of books to support the Women’s Studies program of St. Scholastica’s College.  The Women’s Studies program is a component of the General Education of the College and is required for graduation.

  St. Benedict Collection A collection in honor of St. Benedict, the twin brother of St. Scholastica, it consists of works by him and about him.

  Best Sellers Collection A collection of fiction books which have appeared on “bestsellers” lists.

  Theses Collection:   Includes theses of undergraduate and graduate students and some faculty members of the past five years.  Copies of earlier theses are kept in the St. Scholastica’s College Archives.  Theses do not circulate.

  Reserve Books Section Books selected by faculty members as assigned reading for their classes are shelved in a special section inside the Circulation Counter until the end of the semester.  To ensure their availability to as many students as possible, they can be checked out for overnight use only, starting at 5:00pm and are due the next school day at or before 8:00am.  Reserve books returned at 8:01 incur a fine of PhP10.00 for the first hour and PhP5.00/per hour thereafter.

  Vertical File Collection - This collection consists of newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, and annual reports of companies, bulletins, pictures, grouped by subjects and arranged alphabetically in Princeton boxes on shelves in the Reference Section.  They usually contain current information not yet available in published books. This collection is maintained by the Reference Section staff who will be happy to assist users in finding materials they need.

Library Privileges and Policies

1.      The College Library’s resources and services are extended to all SSC college students, all SSC administrators, faculty members, and registered cross enrollees.  Students from participating schools in the South Manila Inter-institutional Consortium (SM-IC), the Consortium of Women’s Colleges (CWC), and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) inter-institutional consortiums can also use the library subject to the guidelines established by the member schools.  Alumni and visiting researchers may use the library facilities after registering at Reference Section counter.  College students may check out no more than five books at a time upon presentation of their ID.

2.      The library practices the open-shelf system; so it is necessary to inspect bags, folders, books, etc., at the entrance and exit areas.  To maintain order and efficiency, library users are required to fall in line while waiting for their turn at the entrance/exit doors, bag counter, copying machines, and at the circulations counters of the different sections of the library.

3.      The library is a place for study and research and any library user has a responsibility to maintain a quiet atmosphere in consideration for the others in the reading rooms. 

4.      To prevent damage to the collection, please do not eat in the library. There are areas outside the library designated as eating areas.  

5.      Library users are requested to use the public telephone lines located in hallways on campus.  Two of these are near the stairs leading to the library.  Cellular phones may be brought into the reading rooms as long as they are kept on silent mode.   However, conversations over cellular phones are not allowed inside the library.  Library users will be asked to step out of the library if they need to do this.

6.      Please do not reshelve books and periodicals after using them.  Leave them on the table, carrels, or book trucks designated for this purpose.

How to Find Materials in the Collection: 
The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)

The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) contains records of the collections of all the unit libraries of the St. Scholastica’s College campus.  Each wing of the College Library has workstations which users can use to locate the materials they need.

All the libraries on campus use the Library of Congress Classification System which assigns call numbers for each book consisting of alphabets and numbers.  The materials are arranged on shelves alphabetically according to their call numbers.

How to Borrow Books

1.      Consult the Online Public Access Catalog to find out if a book is in the library or what titles the library has about a subject.  Note the call number which will indicate its location in the library.

2.      Fill up slip with call number, author, and title of the book

3.      Locate the book on the shelves

4.      Write your name and your ID number on the orange book card of the book you are borrowing

5.      Present this to the library clerk on duty at the circulation counter.

Important Reminders When Borrowing Books

1.      Overdue Books - Books not returned on time incur a fine of one peso (PhP1.00) per day, inclusive of Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.  The borrowing privilege is suspended until the overdue fine is paid in full.

2.      Mutilation - Library users who check out books from the library are requested to examine the books that they are borrowing for missing pages and damages.  Borrowers are held responsible for whatever damage or mutilation is found on the books when they are returned.

3.      Lost Book - A lost book may be replaced with the more recent edition of the same title or another title on the same topic, subject to the approval of the librarian.  Replacement copies using newsprint paper will not be accepted.  Overdue fines will continue to be imposed until the book is replaced.  A processing fee of PhP60.00 will be charged for each replacement copy.

4.      Lost Clearance Slips - Lost clearance slips will be replaced after payment of the PhP20.00 replacement fee.

Other Services

Photocopying Services - Each wing of the library has a photocopier for those who need copies of library materials that do not circulate.  Library users are requested to present their ID and to fill out a form to indicate the pages they want photocopied.
