The
collection includes foreign and local books and periodicals
in print, microform, and electronic formats and maintains a
collection of newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets and The library’s services include reference or information assistance, instruction in the use of both print and electronic library resources in locating information, preparing bibliographies on special topics upon request by faculty members, and current awareness services for faculty and administrators to assist them in identifying and locating current materials in their areas of specialization. LocationThe College Library is on the second floor of the St. Mechtild and the Sta. Maria buildings. The Sta. Maria wing houses the Reference Section, the Graduate Library, the Periodicals Section, the Computer Room, and the Discussion Room. The St. Mechtild wing houses the Circulation Section, which includes books that may be checked out from the library for a period of one week such as those in the General Collection and those belonging to the following special collections: Filipiniana, Women’s Studies, St. Benedict and Best Sellers. It also houses the Reserve Books Section and the Theses Collection which can be found inside the Circulation Counter. Library Resources
Undergraduate students may use this library only at the request of their professor and the approval of the College Librarian. They can check out only one book.
Indexes to newspaper, magazine and journal articles help users identify and locate the articles they need. The library has the following indexes in print and CD format for this purpose: 1) the SM-IC Article Database which indexes the periodical collections of the five libraries participating in the South Manila Inter-institutional Consortium; 2) the Computerized Index to Philippine Periodicals (CIPPA); 3) the Index to Philippine Periodicals. The library also subscribes to an online periodicals database which gives the citation, abstract, and full text of the articles in over 3,000 selected foreign journals. Periodicals do not circulate because they are hard to replace. A photocopier and printers are provided for those who need copies of articles.
Special Collections:
Library Privileges and Policies1. The College Library’s resources and services are extended to all SSC college students, all SSC administrators, faculty members, and registered cross enrollees. Students from participating schools in the South Manila Inter-institutional Consortium (SM-IC), the Consortium of Women’s Colleges (CWC), and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) inter-institutional consortiums can also use the library subject to the guidelines established by the member schools. Alumni and visiting researchers may use the library facilities after registering at Reference Section counter. College students may check out no more than five books at a time upon presentation of their ID. 2. The library practices the open-shelf system; so it is necessary to inspect bags, folders, books, etc., at the entrance and exit areas. To maintain order and efficiency, library users are required to fall in line while waiting for their turn at the entrance/exit doors, bag counter, copying machines, and at the circulations counters of the different sections of the library. 3. The library is a place for study and research and any library user has a responsibility to maintain a quiet atmosphere in consideration for the others in the reading rooms. 4. To prevent damage to the collection, please do not eat in the library. There are areas outside the library designated as eating areas. 5. Library users are requested to use the public telephone lines located in hallways on campus. Two of these are near the stairs leading to the library. Cellular phones may be brought into the reading rooms as long as they are kept on silent mode. However, conversations over cellular phones are not allowed inside the library. Library users will be asked to step out of the library if they need to do this. 6. Please do not reshelve books and periodicals after using them. Leave them on the table, carrels, or book trucks designated for this purpose. How to Find Materials in the Collection:The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) contains records of the collections of all the unit libraries of the St. Scholastica’s College campus. Each wing of the College Library has workstations which users can use to locate the materials they need. All the libraries on campus use the Library of Congress Classification System which assigns call numbers for each book consisting of alphabets and numbers. The materials are arranged on shelves alphabetically according to their call numbers. For information on how use the OPAC, please see the chart, How to Find a Book in the Library displayed near the OPAC workstations or ask any member of the library staff in the area for assistance. How to Borrow Books1. Consult the Online Public Access Catalog to find out if a book is in the library or what titles the library has about a subject. Note the call number which will indicate its location in the library. 2. Fill up slip with call number, author, and title of the book 3. Locate the book on the shelves 4. Write your name and your ID number on the orange book card of the book you are borrowing 5. Present this to the library clerk on duty at the circulation counter. Important Reminders When Borrowing Books1. Overdue Books - Books not returned on time incur a fine of one peso (PhP1.00) per day, inclusive of Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The borrowing privilege is suspended until the overdue fine is paid in full. 2. Mutilation - Library users who check out books from the library are requested to examine the books that they are borrowing for missing pages and damages. Borrowers are held responsible for whatever damage or mutilation is found on the books when they are returned. 3. Lost Book - A lost book may be replaced with the more recent edition of the same title or another title on the same topic, subject to the approval of the librarian. Replacement copies using newsprint paper will not be accepted. Overdue fines will continue to be imposed until the book is replaced. A processing fee of PhP60.00 will be charged for each replacement copy. 4. Lost Clearance Slips - Lost clearance slips will be replaced after payment of the PhP20.00 replacement fee. Other ServicesPhotocopying Services - Each wing of the library has a photocopier for those who need copies of library materials that do not circulate. Library users are requested to present their ID and to fill out a form to indicate the pages they want photocopied.
