She played an important part in the Synod of Whitby, her influence being one of the decisive factors in securing unity in the English Church. She established the Great Double Monastery of Whitby, an innovation in her time because she had monks living in one building and nuns in another. This monastery, built in a place which, according to legend was marked as a holy place by a blessed light, became a training school for bishops, abbots and teachers. Holy prelates, kings and princes frequently consulted the Holy Abbess in times of great difficulty and significance. 6.
