Thirty-six senior high school students of the Environmental Education elective journeyed to Misamis Occidental and Dakak last November 22- 26, 2006 for their first elective trip for the school year.  Accompanied by Ms. Cristina Samonte, Coordinator for Student Formation and elective teacher, and some members of the faculty, Ms. Nomeriana Ordanza, Ms. Sheryl Sombilon, Ms. Daisy Umali, and Ms. Leticia Cabral (former faculty member), the students enjoyed their escapade with nature for four days and three nights.

The seniors and their teacher chaperones experienced the Christmas Capital of Mindanao, Misamis Occidental, as they were accommodated by the staff of Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP) for a day and two nights. The rest of the trip was spent in Dakak Park and Resort until the morning of the 26th.  On the way to MOAP, the group visited the Misamis Occidental Enterprise Development and Research Center (MOEDRC).  The students also had a glimpse of the beauty of the oldest church in the province, St. John the Baptist Church in Jimenez, where some of the remains of St. Faustina of Poland are kept.  Before

proceeding to Dakak on the third day, the students and teachers visited Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s place of exile, Dapitan.

The second day of the four-day trip was spent in Dolphin Island, a marine sanctuary facility. Various activities, such as fish feeding, snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking were offered for the guests’ enjoyment. The sanctuary serves as a place to interact with the environment and to learn specifically about the marine ecosystem.

Both destinations proved to be useful in gaining insights on environmental consciousness and cultural awareness.  A cultural show was presented by students from an arts school in Misamis Occidental during the last night of the students and teachers in MOAP.  The presentation was a highlight of various dances on courtship, thanksgiving, folk, contemporary ethnic, modern jazz—and Sobanon songs. The dancers of Dakak Park and Resort performed Hawaiian dances wearing colorful costumes of different materials and designs.  The guests participated in the dancing wearing costumes offered to them by the resort dancers - printed cloth for males and the famous grass skirt for females.

The students and teachers flew to their destination via Air Philippines Thursday morning, and via Cebu Pacific on the flight back to Manila Sunday afternoon.
