Launching of 100 Clean & Green Hands for SSC's Centennial
Posted: Thursday May 31, 2007 02:54 PM

The SSC Waste Management Committee launched its Waste Segregation Program with the theme 100 Clean and Green Hands for SSC’s Centennial on January 29, 2007.  The project aims to mobilize all members of the school community to take an active role in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the school canteen.  To promote the program, actual segregation of waste was done in designated areas per unit.  Data gathered during the clean-up was used as bases for enforcement of a workable monitoring procedure of the designated areas per unit in the school canteen.

St. Scholastica’s College and KABALIKASANG Samahan, Inc. under the Archdiocese of Manila Ecology Desk, an organization of scavengers in Pandacan, Manila, have jointly undertaken the Waste Management Program of the school since September 18, 2006.  The KABALIKASANG Samahan, Inc. collects the school's segregated and residual waste daily and buys these segregated recyclables.  The Samahan also sends two (2) Eco-Aides who process the food waste into compost and make the final sorting of the recyclables.  Over a period of four months (September - December 2006), St. Scholastica’s College has already earned P21,276.90 from the recycled wastes.  Aside from the financial benefit to the school, this project has also provided alternative livelihood opportunities to thirty (30) families who earn their living from scavenging.

From January 29 to February 23, 2007, the students and all members of the school community will allot 30 minutes of their time during class period/lunch break/free-time to participate in the monitoring and clean-up.  See guidelines, schedule and assigned areas per unit (.pdf).
