Last May 31, 2006, in simple ceremonies at the William Shaw Theater of De La Salle University, S. Angelica Leviste, OSB, SSC President accepted the chairmanship of the Task Force Safe Schools (TFSS) on behalf of St. Scholastica’s College from last year’s chair, De La Salle University (DLSU) represented by its Executive Vice-President, Dr. Carmelita Quebengco.  Witnessing the turn-over were the Deans of Student Affairs, Heads of Security and other important sectors from the three schools: St. Scholastica's College, DLSU and the College of St. Benilde.

This collaboration is mainly geared towards promoting safety and security within the school-community environment and mutual cooperation and assistance among the member-schools. For the past two years, it has implemented several projects and activities including increasing visibility of the police and security personnel, mutual cooperation among each school’s Security Offices and cooperation and networking with the barangay officials. Several information drives have also been undertaken by the Student Councils to heighten awareness about TFSS and to provide safety tips and precautions. Also, the various Parents’ Associations of the three schools have been very active in the TFSS. In fact, the Parents’ Associations of the three units of SSC have been regularly funding the increased deployment of security personnel.

The keynote speaker during the ceremony was Gen. Pedro Bulaong, Director of the Manila Police District who reiterated his commitment to partner with the schools to protect the studentry and ensure peace and order in Manila. Finally, Community Service Excellence Awards were given out to deserving policemen and security personnel who have contributed to the success of TFSS.

The three schools hope to continue with the TFSS with much vigor and enthusiasm. With the recent initiative of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to address the issue of criminality via the creation of Student Crime Prevention Councils (SCPC’s), the TFSS finds itself increasingly responsive to the needs of the students and the three school communities in general.
