On Caring for Mother Earth
care of Mother Earth. Below are some of the responses of the sisters, administrators, faculty, staff and students to Ms. Gutierrez’s talk. “I guess it was more of the spirituality of the Mother Earth which she presented that struck me. A ‘visual aid’ became more touching as she asked a mother who was due to give birth in weeks’ time to go up the stage. If we care for the baby in a mother’s womb so should we care for God’s creation.”
Sr. Lumen Gloria Dungca, OSB “We are children of our Mother Earth. With this in mind, we have our own duties and responsibilities to take care of her - who gave us a place to live in. We were informed that people lose their lives due to food and water shortage. We realized that we are all interrelated with each other. Our environment is our life. Thus, we really have to take good care of it or else, we will suffer the consequences. We are encouraged to revive the crumbling situation of our nature. Nature protects us like a baby on our mother’s womb and therefore, we should return the gratitude by taking good care of her.”
203A/B/C; 204; 217A/B “The talk is a call for us to become fully aware of our responsibility to maintain stewardship of the Earth, our Mother. We should care for nature and help restore the social and spiritual connections of individual to nature, place and community that development has destroyed. We don’t reject technology. However, we have to think that every change must make us people-centered and that our social practices must be life-centered. There is a big challenge for the Scholastican community to think of credible measures and utilize environmentally sound methods for a cleaner and healthy environment – the initial step should start in our school environment.”
Evelyn M. Jaymalin “Ms. Gutierrez taught us how to care for the environment, like picking litters even if they are not ours. “Stop smoking!” – because it will contribute to ‘global warming’. I also learned that if we litter we are destroying our Mother Earth.” Madon Arcega “I have been re-affirmed that my well-being is interconnected and interdependent to the well being of my relationship and the well-being of my world/environment. Ang pangangalaga at pagmamahal sa kapaligiran ay pananagutan natin ngayon at sa kinabukasan.” Cora Huvalla
“We have learned that we should conserve all the resources we have at present – the forest, our water resources. We need to plant more trees and preserve our remaining forests. Dispose our waste properly, recycle everything we can still use and try our best not to use plastic and non-biodegradable materials. We should not pollute our water because we are also killing other living things. Prevent air pollution – don’t buy products with CFC. God made the earth trash free and we should maintain it the way He plans it to be.” Year III – Night Secondary School “Love and care for our environment – just the way we love our own mother. Her talk instilled in me the value of self-discipline and sensitivity to the needs of my fellowmen. We must show love and respect for Mother Nature. Ms. Gutierrez also showed us the bad effects of pollution in our country.”
Rovilin B. Alonzo
and Maria Christina Malig “What touched me was the way Ms. Chin Chin started her talks – with a song and dance to our Lady and the “lullaby” episodes. It brought me to where my life started or how it began … Ms. Chin Chin presented her talks in a very integrated and wholistic way.”
Sr. Eligia Cababat, OSB “It is not enough to have a stable economy, it is more important to have a stable environment. It is not right to blame those people who are in authority because everyone is responsible in taking care of our Mother Earth.”
205A; 206B/D; 216 A/B “Congratulations both to the organizers and speaker. The content of her talk was very relevant to our needs, and incline with the theme of the school. It was very substantial and challenging for us.”
Venus P. Andaluz “Ms. Gutierrez’s talk on environmental education is very interesting. Her sharing is about what is happening in our environment, how we, the “stewards” are the ones ruining it because of how we live. In the course of her talk, I asked myself how we in the school community can reduce the use of supplies that contain pollutants and switch to products that are not harmful to the environment. Awareness on the different issues is important so as to help in solving our environment problems. Awareness will not be useless if we act.”
Sr. Martha Lugtu, OSB “Ms. Chin Chin Gutierrez’s talk on Environmental Education is a timely opportunity for the school’s Jubilee Celebration. The speaker’s talk is very convincing and versatile. Her spirituality is deep and authentic.”
Sr.
Madonna Intal, OSB
Teresita A. Salmorin “Through the talk, I was once again reminded to only consume what I need, to reduce, reuse and recycle. Most of all, I have to live simply so that the others can simply live.”
Josephine Bargas “I found my relationship with our dear Mother Earth. I discovered and realized the environmental crisis we are in. She also encouraged us to save the earth. What she showed us opened my mind to the other countries which are also suffering from calamities. But deep in our hearts, I know we all wish for a better world.”
Aliya Luisa M. Dalmacio “We realized through the speaker’s talk how serious our problem is in terms of poverty in our planet, particularly in our country. We should be an effective agent of change towards a better world for the future generations. We are encouraged to seek peace and act to alleviate the suffering of Mother Nature. Humans portray a vital role in the world we live in, and part of this role is to be responsible with this world.”
201A/B; 202 A/B/C/D “Locally and globally Mother Earth is dying and there’s an urgent need to save it. We can unite to make a difference. God in His mercy can forgive our faults and shortcomings but any negligence committed against Mother Nature has a consequence we will account for. Nature can’t forgive.”
Leonila G. Cabrera “The talk on Environmental Education brought in new insights which touched one’s innermost conscience by awakening each one’s irresponsible consumption and assist in bringing back ecological balance before it is too late. It was so heart warming to witness her serious and well-known commitment in saving Mother Earth which is what attracts people of all sectors to her cause. She’s a hero in her own rights which makes her so admirable as she is an evolved soul who is far from being a material person. A multi-faceted artist who delivered her message with characteristic conviction.”
Ma. Milagrosa L. Aniban “Our well-being as a people is intimately connected to the well-being of our planet. Let’s do all we can to heal the earth.”
Edna V. Esquejo
“Ms. Gutierrez explained to us how important our Mother Earth is. That we should love it as we love ourselves; to value it because it is God’s gift to us. We should not destroy nature because if we do so we are also destroying our own body.” Year IV – Night Secondary School “Loving our Mother Earth means loving ourselves.”
Eloisa Reyes “The talk was meaningful and an eye opener. The story she told us (Mr. Beetle’s Many Rooms) was inspiring. She presented the current situation of Mother Earth. We were surprised and it made me feel guilty to see and hear all of that. We must care for Mother Earth – Now!”
Risalina V. Ubas “We should give respect, care and love to our nature because this is the place where we exist. Our needs are infinite but our resources are limited – that is why we should use our resources wisely.” Year V – Night Secondary School “Ms. Chin Chin Gutierrez’s talk was superb and was something that can change the attitude, ways or even lives of people. We learned to care for the environment, how to preserve it and what will actually happen if we don’t. Right now, some calamities are happening. We should join Ms. Chin Chin in the campaign and movement for saving Mother Earth.”
Regina Rodriguez “It’s about time that we really take good care of our environment. The lives of our future generation greatly depend on it. It’s so depressing to know and see what mankind did to our natural resources. God gave all of these to us so it’s just proper that we treasure and value them.”
Nannette E. Jamet “Ms. Chin Chin Gutierrez’s talk on the environment was highly inspirational for all who participated. Aside from explaining to us the acronyms “LAHAT” and “AKO”, she told us also our relationship with the environment; physically and spiritually. The cultural songs, the story and her other presentations showed us what is now happening around us and how we are deeply affected by it.”
Gianica Reena S. Monteagudo
“The very enlightening and erudite talk of Ms. Chin Chin Gutierrez awakened my desire to double my effort in conserving and improving what is left of Mother Nature. In my own little ways, I know that I have something to contribute.”
Erminda E. de Leon “It’s scary to think about what would happen to our children given the present condition of our Mother Earth. The time to move is now before it’s too late. I hope everyone takes part, giving glory to the Lord by way of taking care of what He has given us, and showing concern for each other.”
Mary Anne Nayve “It gave us knowledge about the world, how critical it is right now. Noon akala natin ganun-ganon lang yon pero pagkatapos kong marinig ang talk niya parang galit ako sa sarili ko dahil isa din ako na sumisira sa ating mundo. Pangako ko po sa sarili ko kahit napakaliit na bagay gagawin ko para makatulong na gamutin ang ating mundo.”
Hermisa S. Cabil “All that I am, and all that I hope to be, I owe to my Creator. Thus, in gratitude and in giving glory to Him, it is just right to be concerned, to value and to take care of all His creations.”
Dyna Silos-del Prado “The talk has not only given me the idea on how bad the environment is but it had re-awakened my personal duty and obligation to take part on its immediate restoration.”
