Economics Opening Day: Exhibits on Culture of Peace, Jubilee and Care for Mother Earth

 

The Economics Department and Economics Organization (Econorg) celebrated its Annual Economics Week last September 4-6, 2006 with a wide array of activities, namely, exhibits and mini-tiangge, eco-know-mics (a quiz show), extemporaneous contest, Eco-talakayan (a round-table-discussion), and a symposium. This year's theme focused on "Strengthening the Role of Economics Organization Through Scholastican Education: Focus on Jubilee, Culture of Peace and Care for the Mother Earth". 

Among the items sold from mini-tiangge were native delicacies, fruit juices, RTWs, ink-refill for computer printer. The exhibits were participated in by the all classes of Eco 10.  Classes of Drs. Jun Camat and Gudelia Saporna were assigned on Care for Mother Earth and Jubilee, respectively while that of Prof. Kirsten Mae Namay on Culture of Peace. The winners were 202C (1st Place), 202D (2nd Place) and 202B (3rd Place). Winners of the eco-know-mics quiz were: 202C (1st Place), 202A (2nd Place) and BSA2 (3rd Place). And for the extemporaneous contest, the winners were 202A (1st Place), 202B (2nd Place) and 206B (3rd Place).

Round-table-discussion with the resource speakers

 

The Eco-talakayan round-table discussion invited young professionals and student leaders to talk on the "The Role of Young Economic Professionals and Students in Promoting Jubilee, Culture of Peace and Care for the Mother Earth". Among the invited speakers were: Mr. Jake Aragon, former president of the Philippine Council of Economics Students (2004) and presently a high school faculty member teaching English at Xavier School; and Mr. Grabriel Gan, former college council president of Colegio San Juan de Letran and currently a systems auditor at Philippine Airlines.
 

The symposium was attended by all students taking Eco 10 (Principles of Economics with Taxation and Agrarian Reform) and Eco 2 (Macroeconomics with Taxation and Agrarian Reform). Ms. Dinah Bastasa, Agrarian Reform Officer from the Department of Agrarian Reform served as the resource person. She discussed the present situation of agrarian reform in the Philippines under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
