“High tech elections – even ahead of the real thing”

Ever since the Grade School unit has adopted the Electoral Process Module in its curriculum, it just keeps getting better every year - making innovations and keeping abreast with the technology.  This year’s Grade School election module started with Registration on July 4, 2006 and ended with the Oath-taking ceremony of elected officials on August 15, 2006.

The dawning of the Computer Generation had influenced the students and faculty

members of Grades 5-6 to update their program during the Miting de Avance.  The party games, platforms and candidates’ photos and profile were presented using PowerPoint Presentation.

Prep to Grade 5 registration was semi-computerized.  After the usual paper-and-pen registration, the COMELEC members encoded the names of the voters by area and came up with a printed Masterlist of Voters during the election.

The computerized voting system started last year with the Grade 6 students as the first online trial voters.  A special program was created by the Information Technology Office (ITO) which allows the students to perform online registration.  Student voters are given ID numbers and instructed to log on their password to the system.

During the election process, students were briefed on how to access their account and cast their votes online.  Upon access, the voters were able to view the photos and names of the official candidates.

Another significant feature of the module was the absentee voting, which allowed those who were sick at the time of the election to cast their votes via e-mail.  A special e-mail address was created by the COMELEC to ensure that absentee voters will be given the chance to exercise their right to vote.

Results of the election from Prep to Grade 6 were processed and announced on day one of the election.  The proclamation of winners ignited cheers, hurrahs, jeers and tears from the students.

With this year’s invigorating turnout of events in the Election Process, it is expected that next year’s would be more exciting and fun-filled for the students.
