The Social and Cultural Context of Waldorf Education and the Foundations of Anthroposophy, an introductory course to a Master’s Degree in Steiner/Waldorf Education, was conducted at St. Scholastica’s College on October 2-6, 2006. The lecturer was Mr. Nicanor Perlas, the founder of the Center for Alternative Development Initiatives in Manila. There were 29 participants composed of future Waldorf teachers, parents of children in the Waldorf schools, current teachers and administrators of schools.

The lectures and discussions centered on Spiritual Science, the process of knowledge and the stage of taking initiatives, the image of the human being in this process of knowledge, the structure and evolution of the universe, and the implications of these relationships to parenting and Steiner Education. There was a rich exchange of ideas in the class and the process of the introductory module has been a transformative experience for all the participants.

Waldorf Education balances artistic, academic and practical work educating the whole child, hand and heart as well as mind. (www.steinercollege.org/waldorf) It offers flexible and child-centered activities and emphasizes creativity in all aspects of children’s work. Its innovative methodology and developmentally-oriented curriculum, permeated with the arts, address the child's changing consciousness as it unfolds, stage by stage. Imagination and creativity are cultivated as well as cognitive growth and a sense of responsibility. Under the warm and active instruction of their teachers, children are provided with a creative and nurturing environment in which to develop, grow and learn.
