St. Scho Mass Comm students and professors win top honors at the
2006 Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA)

Best Student TV Production

A thesis production by two Mass Communication graduates of St. Scholastica's College won the top prize in the Best Student TV Production Category of the 23rd Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).

The winning audio-visual production, Praxis: Advocacy, was produced, written, and directed by Josielou Mendoza and Anicia Vanessa Manzo (ABMC '06) and chronicles the advocacy efforts of various civil society groups to enact a juvenile justice law that would protect the rights of countless Filipino minors

languishing in jails.  The thesis tandem was advised by Prof. Flordeliz Abanto, Broadcast Journalism coordinator of the Mass Communication program.


The Scholastican production bested other finalists from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and St. Paul's University, Quezon City.

Honors for Mass Comm Faculty

Some members of the Mass Comm faculty also received honors from the CMMA for outstanding professional achievements in radio and television.

Sugpuin ang Korupsyon, aired on DZRH and executive-produced by Prof. Abanto, was adjudged Best News and Commentary Program on Radio.

ABC 5's Dokyu, executive-produced by Prof. Anabel Maano and head-written by Mass Comm Chair Prof. Johnathan Rondina, received a special citation for its contribution "in democratizing access to television."

Dokyu has also recently received the 2006 Golden Dove Award fro Best TV Documentary Program from the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas.  It was also nominated in the same category in the 2006 Star Awards for Television.

Other SSC Finalists

Another SSC student production, Bida sa Serbisyo, was named finalist in the 2006 CMMA.  This centennial production is a video documentary that pays tribute to the school's manongs and manangs.  Last year, another centennial production, Women of Pax, made it to the CMMA finals.

The Little Bluestockings, school organ of the Grade School Department, was named finalist in the grade school division, Student Organ Category.

The CMMA awards night was held last November 10, 2006 at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City.  The awards were handed out by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales.
