Last November 10-11, 2006, student leaders from the Consortium of Women’s Colleges (CWC) gathered at the Assumption Antipolo to take part in its annual leader’s conference. Young women from Assumption College San Lorenzo, College of the Holy Spirit, Miriam College, and St. Scholastica’s College, Manila, together with their respective Deans of Student Affairs and Social Action Officers gathered for two days of inspiration, motivation and empowerment.

The program highlights include seminars on Christian Leadership, Replicating Leadership, a “simulation” on the situation of another reality (a slum community near Assumption Antipolo), and the Action Plan of CWC Student Councils.

In the “Replicating Leadership” section of the conference, four esteemed alumnae of CWC schools enthusiastically share their expertise on being student leaders during their time. They are now event organizers, corporate managers and social action volunteers. Ms. May Valdez from Assumption College discussed about having a firm value system and a structured process of planning events.  Ms. Lea Tapang from the College of the Holy Spirit emphasized that a student leader is a work in progress and is a woman with social grace.  Ms. Veron Villarin of Miriam College shared that student leaders must balance family life and school life. Ms. Selene Yu of St. Scholastica’s College, Manila highlighted that woman leaders must live out a value-based, Christ-centered leadership.  Ms. Yu ended her speech with this one striking statement: “Failure is an event, not a person.”

On the second day, the participants visited Sitio Malanim 2, a community near the school. The participants asked some mothers of the families about their situation, the major problems they experience and the help that they receive. After the processing of the activity, the participants prepared action plan as CWC Student Leaders of 2006-2007.  The conference culminated with a Eucharistic Celebration and a farewell dinner.

The experience of being in the conference was a great opportunity for CWC student leaders to exchange ideas with each other, develop camaraderie among them and break the bonds of division between them.
