School of Arts and Sciences | Mass Communication major in Advertising / Broadcast Journalism / Development Communication / Print Journalism

From its humble beginnings in 1983, the Department of Mass Communication is now one of the biggest departments in the School of Arts and Sciences. The department boasts of state-of-the art radio and television studios, advanced production equipment, and faculty members who are a mix of academicians and media practitioners.

 The department offers students four minor programs: Advertising, Broadcast Journalism, Development Communication and Print Journalism. Each minor track features theoretical grounding and skills training developed by experts in each discipline, in order to provide students with knowledge in a specific field, while maintaining a strong core of communication and media subjects.

Philosophy and Mission Statement

 

The Mass Communication Department envisions a media and communication environment that is:

  • free and independent,

  • critical, vigilant and pro-active,

  • responsible,

  • nationalistic,

  • inclusive, pluralistic and accessible to all,

  • empowering and transformative, and,

  • committed to the advocacy of gender fairness, ecological harmony, social justice and peace.

Towards this end, the Department commits itself to becoming the country’s leading institution in the formation and education of Filipino women media and communication practitioners by providing a media and communication program anchored on Filipino and Christian-Benedictine values, academic excellence, public service and social responsibility.

General Objectives

 

The Mass Communication program aims to facilitate student learning in the theoretical and practical aspects of the following areas of media and communication:  writing, production and research.   

 
Specific Objectives

 

Specifically, the Mass Communication program aims to develop the following competencies among its students: 

  1. Proficiency and imaginativeness through writing courses,

  2. Technical skills and creativity through production work,

  3. Discipline, investigative skills, and critical discernment through research projects; and

  4. A deep sense of social responsibility, gender and ecological sensitivity in their professional and personal lives.

Faculty Profile

Prof. MA. AURORA LOLITA L. LOMIBAO,
Chairperson

Prof. Lomibao is a journalist who has written for the daily newspapers The Manila Times and Today. She has also contributed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Malaya and The Manila Chronicle and local media such as the Pangasinan Regional Examiner and The Sunday Punch (Dagupan). Prof. Lomibao has also worked as communications consultant for the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and as Public Relations Officer at the Department of Energy.  She has also been a Corporate Communications Manager for companies in industries such as pre-need and information technology. Currently, Prof. Lomibao is a consultant for information technology (IT) and communication interventions and solutions.

Prof. Lomibao’s personal and academic advocacy for underprivileged sectors has led her to serve in non-government organizations such as the Media Alternatives for Southern Tagalog, Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas and Salinlahi Alliance for Children.

Prof. Lomibao graduated with a degree in Journalism from UP Diliman’s College of Mass Communication and is currently pursuing her MA in Media Studies from the same university as a scholar of the United Board for Higher Christian Education in Asia (UBHCEA). She has been with St. Scholastica’s College for the past five years.

Prof. FLORDELIZ ABANTO,

Prof. Abanto has been teaching for the past 23 years in different universities including the UP College-Cebu and St. Theresa’s College-Cebu, Bangkok University and De La Salle University. She has also served as a Director for Special Events Coverages and Functions and Production Consultant at Sky Cable Cebu.

Prof. Abanto has a degree in AB Broadcast Communication and units in MA Broadcast Communication, both from UP Diliman.  She also holds an MA in Communication Arts major in Interpersonal Communication from Bangkok University. Prof. Abanto has also been the recipient of a one-year Training in Educational Broadcasting, from South Carolina Educational TV, Columbia-South Carolina, USA. 

 

Currently, Prof. Abanto is a co-executive producer of the award-winning radio show Sugpuin ang Korupsyon, aired over DZRH every Saturday from 2:00-3:00pm. This program is a project of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and has received the 2005 KBP Golden Dove Award for Best Public Affairs Program.

Prof. ROSA MARIA FELICIANO

Prof. Feliciano has been with St. Scholastica’s College for the past 11 years. She is a full-time faculty member at the UP College of Mass Communication and is presently the Chair of the Broadcast Department. She is also the Station Manager of DZUP-AM, the community radio station of UP Diliman.

Prof. Feliciano’s fields of specialization are radio and television production, direction and writing. She also teachers Research in Broadcasting, Proposal Planning and Bulding in Media, TV Internship, and graduate courses in radio and TV production and direction.

 

Prof. Feliciano is an active member of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and is a Board Member of the KBP Standards Authority. She completed her MA and AB degrees in Broadcasting at the University of the Philippines’ College of Mass Communication, Diliman. She also took a special course in Training the Trainers in the Netherlands.

Prof. PAM MIRAS

Prof. Miras has been making short films since 1999. She has won several awards for her work, including the Gawad Urian for Short Film in 2000, 1st Prize for Short Narrative at the 13th Gawad CCP, 1st Place for Philippine Shorts at the MOV Digital Film Festival (2006) and Best Screenplay for Shorts at the 1st Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Her works have also been screened in several countries including the USA, France, Singapore, UAE, Malaysia and Italy for the Pesaro Independent Film Festival.

Prof. Miras has worked on various production roles in various companies and currently works as a freelance writer. 

Prof. JOHN NOSENAS,

Prof. Nosenas is currently the Deputy Director for the Center for Ecozoic Living and Learning, a non-government organization for the environment based in Silang, Cavite. He was the former Executive Director of the Alouette Foundation, an NGO for children, and head of the Electronic Media Center of the Communication Foundation for Asia.

Prof. Nosenas is also an independent media producer of video documentaries for community education and advocacy. He is also a trains NGO workers in the production and use of audio-visual materials for group discussions, seminars and training-workshops.

Prof. JOHNATHAN L. RONDINA

Prof. Johnathan “Nath” Libarios Rondina obtained his master’s degree in Communication from the University of the Philippines in 2001 with Best Graduate Thesis Distinction and his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communication, also from the UP, with cum laude honors in 1991.  He is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Communication also at the UP.

Prof. Rondina has worked as a journalist, producer and writer for print, radio, television and new media.  From 1991-1996, he acted as Executive Producer of Balitaang Pinoy, an IT-delivered news and information service for Filipinos in Japan.  In 1997, he edited High Gear, one of the Philippines’ pioneering automotive publications.  In 2001, he received the Truth Award for Investigative Journalism from the Ateneo’s Institute on Church and Social Issues for his work on e-mail order brides and marital migration in the Philippines.  He is currently a member of the pool of executive producers for ABC Channel 5’s news and public affairs division and is the headwriter of the acclaimed program Dokyu. Prof. Rondina writes on arts, culture and cinema for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and inq7.net. In addition, he is a digital photo-artist whose works have been featured in several art shows and publications.

 

Prof. Rondina has been a member of the faculty of Mass Communication at St. Scholastica’s College since 1995.  He is also a lecturer at the Graduate Studies Department of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

Prof. CHARLTON JULES ROMERO

Prof. Romero is currently a member of the bar and has been a legal practitioner for 17 years. He is currently managing partner of the Romero Publico Romero Law Offices. As legal practitioner, he has extensive practice in various areas and venues (judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative). His law practice has been balanced with academic as well as volunteer and pro-bono work in both the private and government sectors.

Prof. Romero has been confidential legal assistant and researcher for Justice Flerida Ruth Romero (ret.) in the International Labour Organization (ILO) Administrative Tribunal (Geneva), the Asian Development Bank Administrative Tribunal (Manila), and also in various commercial international mediation and arbitration disputes.

 

He is sitting as a member of the board of directors of Industria Productions, Inc. and Informer Media, Inc. He is also a member of the convergence, security and legal and regulatory committees of the Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (ITECC) created by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo under Executive Order No. 18.

 

Prof. Romero received his AB Broadcast Communication degree from the UP Institute of Mass Communication and his LLB from the UP College of Law. He also received his MBA from the Ateneo de Manila Graduate School of Business where he was consistently in the Dean’s Honor List. 

Prof. PRIMA JESUSA BERONGOY QUINSAYAS

Prof. Quinsayas earned her AB Communication: Journalism and MA Communication: Journalism degrees from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She graduated Magna cum Laude for her Bachelor’s Degree.

She is currently in her senior year at the Arellano University School of Law, where she is a Board of Trustees scholar.

 

Having served as Department Chair for eight years, she now has more time to climb mountains and to join her sons Paulo and Patrick in their taekwondo trainings.
