The Suzuki Method

A Brief Introduction

The Suzuki Method is a special approach to teaching instrumental music developed by the Japanese violin teacher Dr. Schinichi Suzuki.  The method is also known as the Mother Tongue Approach, since it uses the way by which every human being learns his or her native language as a basis for teaching instrumental music.  The Suzuki Method has a specific educational philosophy, a particular pedagogical approach, and a program of education.  The complete program of education will consist of the following essential elements:

1.  Listening and Observation – Exposure to music through listening, observation of other
children’s lessons and attendance of recitals and concerts are encouraged.

2.  Parental Involvement – Parents, especially of very young beginners, are encouraged to
attend lessons with the child, take notes, supervise and assist the child during home
     practice.

3.  Private Lessons – Attending individual lessons with a Suzuki-trained teacher are done to
master the intricate details of instrumental performance.

4.  Group Lessons – Weekly group lessons provide a helpful environment and an occasion to
share the music experience, to learn how to play in an ensemble, to review and reinforce
skills learned, and to motivate children to practice at home.

5.  Core Repertoire – The Suzuki Method has a carefully graded and selected repertoire that
children must learn by memory and retain as they progress, enabling them to participate
actively in group lessons and performances, and to build a repertoire that they can perform
     anytime.

6.  Recitals – Frequent recitals encourage the sharing of learned music and develop confidence
in playing for an audience.  When a child has mastered a certain book level, he is
encouraged to play the entire book in a Graduation Recital.

7.  Suzuki Membership – Children, parents and teachers who are using the materials and the
educational programs of The Suzuki Method are encouraged to become members of the
Philippine Suzuki Association (PSA).  Membership benefits include recital performance
assessment, professional development for teachers, and a chance to participate in
Workshops and Seminars organized by the PSA.
