Bachelor of Science Major in HRM

The Program of Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) initially started as a 2-Year Certificate Course with 33 students in 1975.  The College’s rationale for such a program was primarily to abide by DEC’s mandate of providing a terminal course for entrants who would like to join the workforce soon.  Furthermore, the Certificate Course became the catch basin for students deficient of the entrance requirements of the College.

There was not stopping for the popularity of the HRM course since the 70’s.  The Program attracted more enrollees and soon there was a clamour for a Degree Program.  In 1976, the 2-Year Certificate course was attached to Bachelor of Arts (AB) Degree, and in 1979 there were 19 who became the first graduates with an AB with Certificate in HRM.

By 1982, the 2-Year Certificate Program was phased out since the Hospitality Industry was less likely to hire a graduate with an HRM certificate. The industry demanded more of the Degree graduates especially for supervisory and managerial positions. Responding to the need of the times to provide a good Business Core background, the AB with Certificate in HRM evolved into a Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) with a Certificate in HRM.  Then in 1984 the BSC with HRM Program was further enhanced into a Ladderized Program, meaning the student may wish to graduate at 2nd or 3rd with a Certificate; or remain until 4th year and graduate with a Diploma. Though there was a steady number graduating with an AB with HRM, the first batch of two (2) who graduated with a BSC with HRM marched at the end of SY 1982-1983.

The year 1984 also marked the introduction of a new HRM Curriculum, this time it was a Bachelor of Science (BS) major in HRM. There was a need to reduce the business core requirements and streamline the General Education Core.  With this drastic move, the Department saw the steady growth of graduates with BS major in HRM degree from a mere number of 3.

Finally in 1995, the revitalized HRM curriculum was further streamlined to 153 units (from 176 units) yet strengthening the content of its Professional Core.

Presently, the Department has been enjoying a growth rate of more than 50% and graduating 70% of its Seniors. The HRM as a major field of study has finally found its home in the BS Curriculum.

THE BIRTH OF I-CATHY

In SY 2005-2006, I-CATHY became an Institute.  What used to be the Hotel and Restaurant Management Department has grown into an innovative and dynamic entity.  With an excellent faculty that trains students for the competitive hospitality industry and the global market, I-CATHY is ready to meet these demands, while upholding the mission of St. Scholastica's College of providing academic excellence as our Benedictine service to the community.

Ms. Noemi Cancio, the Institute's first Director, introduced us to the world of I-CATHY.

I-CATHY is a spin off of the former HRM department.  It definitely has more expansive programs than what the department had and it is more industry-based and competency-based.  The Institute is not only align with local agencies like CHED or TESDA, but it is also align internationally.  SSC I-CATHY has been benchmarking internationally.  With globalization, there has to be academic mobility evident in the institution's tie-ups.  A student can take up a few courses in SSC, and if she wants to specialize in culinary arts, go to Les Roches, then come back in school.  Or if she wants tourism, or tour management, she may opt to go to Brisbane, Australia.  These are sandwich programs that can be offered to students.
