The ceremonial construction of the Sphere of Rattan participated by administrators and students during the school's celebration of Community Day,
December 3, 2007.

The Committee on Ecological Concern concluded its environmental week celebration with the symbolic institution of the sphere of rattan and announcement of winners for the Photography and On-the-Spot Bio Bayong competitions during the institutional Peace Camp held last December 20, 2007.

The Sphere of Rattan was a unifying structure that represents threads of community among the members of the Scholastican family – Benedictine sisters, students, faculty, and all its employees. The pieces of rattan used to form the ball were painted with various hues to embody diversity of disciplines. The colors that were selected according to Mr. Benjamin Cabrera signify the multidisciplinary approach in inculcating environmental awareness so as to represent a dynamic play of foreground or background relationship of colors. The ball is the school’s entry for the SMIIC Fair 2008 at SM Mall of Asia.

The On-the-Spot Bio Bayong Competition has came a success as one hundred seventy registrants from all units of the school throng St. Scholastica’s garden to design/decorate their own Earth bag last December 19, 2007.  Each bag has been well crafted with admirable designs as students and teachers alike voiced out their call of minimizing the use and unwanted disposal of plastic bags.  After a thorough deliberation of our judges, a unanimous decision was made for the three best Earth bags. The team of Ms. Stefani Mesina, Ms. Mara Lopez and Ms. Patricia de Guzman of the High School won the third prize. The second and the first prizes were taken home by Ms Angeline Aman (HS) and Ms. Aldric Lea Dalumpines (College), respectively.  Ms. Dalumpines’ entry will become the official Earth bag of the school. It will soon be reproduced to be used by members of the community as they purchase their groceries and other merchandise for varied purposes.

The December 5, 2007 Photography competition showcased the artistry and talents of the members of the Benedictine community in handling the still camera. Photographs displayed and judged at the Pergola caught the attention  of every Scholastican  as each marveled at the ingenuity of the photographer in capturing an image where elements of light, tones and values interplayed. At the conclusion of the deliberation, headed by our School President,   Sr. Angelica Leviste,OSB; four photographs emerged as winners.  Two college students shared the third place – Ms. Gemille Yu and Ms. Aivy Asis; Mr Edgar dela Cruz who is an Office Personnel bagged the second position and the top prize winner is from the High School unit, Ms. Kaye Pizarro.

The committee is pleased with the positive response and overwhelming support of the Benedictine community as it makes history in celebrating its first institutional Environmental Week. This gesture of the community is a very visible concerted effort of addressing some issues that confront the environment and its commitment to SAVE MOTHER EARTH.
