Rain,
rain, go away, we the Juniors want to play.
Rain, rain, go away, WE THE JUNIORS WANT TO PLAY!
Year 3 -
Involvement at indoor games
This old nursery rhyme must have been in the minds of the girls last
January 18, 2008 as we were on our way to Blueroze Farms for the
year III major integration activity of the fourth quarter. I
personally did not check the weather forecast since it had been
bright and sunny the previous day. But here was the rain, at times
falling in soft drizzles and at times in strong showers. What was
going through the mind of our year level facilitator, Mrs. Anita Antoni, I could only guess. She had been through a
rough morning since the buses came late and incomplete (we were
expecting nine buses but only eight came on time) and then the rain fell.
We reached a wet and muddy site at about half-past eight in
the morning. After a quick teacher’s meeting, we decided to push through
with the outdoor activity despite the rain since we had instructed the girls
to pack caps and rain gear with one obvious exception, fire-building. As it
turned out, I was not alone in expecting the day to be bright and sunny. A
good number of the girls did not bring caps nor rain coats. Others who did
bring caps did not bring coats and those who did bring coats did not bring
caps and their “coats” were actually sweaters and cardigans!
First on the schedule was tent pitching. Members of the CORE
taught the students how to pitch a basic pup-tent in the rain, while the
teachers watched them under tents of their own. Once the tents were up, it
was on to the different stations of the day: gadget-making, orienteering,
rope course, confidence line and bengala. The girls had fun despite the
rain although a couple of those who did not have rain gear were already
shivering from the cold. Conditions had shifted from just being rainy to
being rainy and windy. Because of this, it was decided that the
student be made to change into dry clothes and have lunch inside their
respective buses. The afternoon schedule would just have to suffer because
of the non-stop rain. And then, as if to demonstrate the unpredictability
of the weather, the rain stopped. And so the students were again allowed to
continue with their outdoor schedule (and almost at once, it began to
drizzle again). To cap the day’s activities, we had a synthesis and
concluding rites portion led by the CLE Area. I think this part of the day
would have been more dramatic had the students been able to generate the
amount of trash they would have if it weren’t for the rain but I suppose it
had to do.
