DiSCHOFever at St. Scho

The music of the 80’s came back alive and kicking last February 10 when St. Scholastica's Manila High School Batch 83’s homecoming shook the hallowed St. Cecilia’s Hall.  Themed DISCHO FEVER, the program was opened with a fabulous dance number of a medley of hit songs from the 80’s by the hosting batch.  Other celebrating batches followed, equally shaking their booties to 80’s dance tunes highlighted by Golden Jubilarians (HS '58) number of Buttercup and Footloose.

Jubilarian batches that celebrated the 80's included HS '48 with Mambo Kings, HS '53 with Physical, HS '63 singing Don’t Worry, Be Happy, HS '68 with Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, HS '73 with Dirty Dancing and HS '78 with a Gloria Estefan medley.

Performances also included college jubilarians class '68 with Lanca Perfume and class '78 with Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To do With It.

College jubilarians '58, '63 and '73 were also present.

The whole show was stitched together by the main man and host of the night, Paolo Bediones, who was alternately co-hosted by three ladies from Batch ’83, Leni Iboleon–Dy, Doreen Bernal and Margot Balderas–Torres.

The energy was high as everyone tripped down memory lane as each batch flashed back to an era when disco and dance were the craze.  Then after all the performances came the biggest surprise yet.  A special guest graced the occasion with his energetic presence to aptly cap the show.  An icon of the 80’s himself, whose songs were dear to Batch ’83, Mister Pure Energy, GARY V. was the highlight of the night.  He sang hit after 80’s hit that he soon had everyone (yes, even the Benedictine sisters) on their feet and dancing.

Tough as it was to follow Gary’s act, Batch ’83 returned to the stage with a final song that brought back fond memories of friendships and happy high school life with the song “That’s What Friends Are For.”  It was a touching end to what was lauded as one of the best homecomings ever.

That, however, was just the beginning of the night.  After the program, dinner was served under a clear, starlit night outside in the open field of the school grounds.  Everyone enjoyed their reunions with teachers, mentors and old friends from near and far.  Then the dancing resumed after dinner with music coming from still another group from the 80’s, THE RAGE BAND.  Dancing, laughter and stories went on even after Marisa Bunag (also a Scholastican) of Rage was done singing and the mobile DJ took over and continued to play music Batch ’83 loved.

It was not a homecoming as homecomings typically go.  It was not tediously long or burdened with the usual presentations of honorees and other compulsories, nor was it overly indulgent in showcasing the homecoming batch either. Perhaps all who were fortunate enough to attend will attest that it was simply a night of pure enjoyment and camaraderie both for the Jubilarians and their guests.

And as the famous song from the 80’s goes:

Get ready tonight
We’re gonna make this a night to remember

And St. Scho High School Batch ’83 truly did.
