Mr. Christian Tan, SSC Bachelor of Music in Violin first year student, was one of the delegates who represented and successfully completed the Asian Youth Orchestra 2007 Rehearsal Camp and Tour.

The 103 members of the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) were among the finest young musicians in China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Chosen through highly competitive auditions held throughout the region, they were together for six weeks each summer, initially for a three week Rehearsal Camp, then to perform on tour for three weeks with international solo artists and conductors.

Christian was one of the 103 musicians selected from more than 1,000 aspirants and among five musicians selected to represent the Philippines in AYO this year.  The orchestra performed seventeen (17) concerts in Hong Kong, China and Japan.

Mr. Richard Pontzious, BBS, Founder and Artistic Director of AYO, stated "despite being the youngest member in the orchestra, Christian was as professional as the oldest members.  He was eager to learn what the coaches and conductor had to offer, and he absorbed the techniques and information like a sponge.  Although traveling on tour can be demanding both physically and mentally, Christian maintained a professional attitude throughout the stress and strain.  He was always at rehearsals on time and even early, warming up before the concerts and helped out when needed."

Mr. Tan's violin instructors were Mr. William Pu, associate concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Mr. Thanos Adamopoulos, concertmaster of the Monnaie Opera, Brussels.

At the end of the tour Christian was chosen as one of the three orchestra members to receive the Artistic Director Achievement Award.  He was acknowledged to have grown throughout the Rehearsal Camp and Tour and achieved beyond the organizers' expectations.

Mr. Pontzious further noted, "we were very pleased to have Christian in AYO this summer.  If there are many youngsters like him, there will be more Filipinos in AYO in the future."
