     St. Scholastica's Building, the landmark

St. Scholastica’s College will unveil a new historical marker commemorating its 100 year history on December 3, 2007 at 9:30 in the morning.  The National Historical Institute (NHI) approved the marker, which will be placed in front of the St. Scholastica’s Building, near the Information Office.

Honorable Ambeth R. Ocampo, Chairperson of the National Historical Institute, will formally uncover the historical marker in the presence of the Board of Trustees, Expanded Educational Council, representatives from the student body, alumnae and parents.   SSC President, Sr. M. Angelica Leviste, OSB will accept the marker on behalf of the Scholastican community.  Standing as witnesses are Sr. M. Rebecca Maglalang, OSB, SSC Vice-President for Administrative Affairs and Honorable Ludovico D. Badoy, NHI Executive Director.

The marker reads thus:

The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, Germany opened its elementary school in Moriones Street, Tondo, Manila on 3 December 1906.  They laid the cornerstone of formal music education in October 1907.  The school transferred to San Marcelino Street, Manila on 24 December 1907; and later to Pennsylvania Street (now Leon Guinto) on 24 December 1914.  The College department was opened in 1920.  St. Cecilia’s Hall designed by Andres Luna de San Pedro, was inaugurated in Manila on March 8, 1932.  During World War II, the Japanese occupied St. Scholastica’s College from 1942 to 1945.  The buildings were razed to the ground during the Battle of Manila in February 1945.  The school was reopened in 1947.  The Institute of Women’s Studies (IWS) was established in 1985.  Among its graduates are Corazon C. Aquino, Cecilia Muņoz-Palma and Lucresia Kasilag.
