Ten-Ten, SSC's mascot, bringing delight to the kids in After months of training and preparation by the Young Leaders, the St. Scholastica’s College’s Dreams+Teams (D+T) Club held its first-ever Sports Festival entitled “SupPORT HEROES.” It is in line with the D+T objectives of the clubmakers’ learning how to plan and organize a safe, fun and inclusive sport/art festival for primary school children and to conduct sports events in the children’s local community. British Council Director Andrew Pickens, SSC administrators and guests from their UK link: Emerson Park School among others graced the occasion. The festival was held last March 6, 2008 at the SSC Grounds. Forty children, aged 6-12 from the school’s partner community Santissima Trinidad, gamely marched on the school field , holding up handmade pennants, for the Opening Ceremony. In tune with the festival’s Super Heroes theme, the kids were grouped into teams named after a value exhibited by a superhero: Team Mayumi (Darna), Mabilis (Volta), Malakas (Superman), Maliksi (Flash), Maaasahan (Batman), Matulungin (Lastikman), Matapang (Captain Barbell), and Masipag (X-Men).
No FEAR! That was the battlecry of Team Matapang Following the Opening Ceremony was an icebreaker and a series of games which were all innovations of existing ones and were facilitated by the Young Leaders themselves. There were a total of four activity stations. Each was to host only two teams at a time on rotation basis. The 20-minute station consists of two parts. First was the developmental story-telling aimed at teaching the kids about what D+T is all about: sports, arts, education and leadership. The second part was the actual game. After the activities, the kids were still high in spirits and retreated to the Graffiti Wall to express their thoughts on what sets the Filipinos apart from other cultures. Then children and guests went on a gustatory trip that included free-flowing ice cream. The participants were also entertained by a well choreographed performance by the High School Pep Squad and a song number by Naomi and Kaori Lizaso. After which, certificates of participation were given out, along with the prizes in recognition of those who performed exceptionally. Throughout the occasion, Ten-ten, the SSC mascot, appeared to the guests’ delight. The Young Leaders had gained many insights from planning and executing the sports festival. “Through this sports festival, we were able to express our creativity and resourcefulness,” shared Asst. Festival Manager Reiginne Quevada. Crisselda Tamondong, the D+T club secretary agreed, “The festival was successful. Though there were problems encountered, they were solved right away. The event was truly an opportunity for the Young Leaders to showcase their skills and talents.” Kaori Lizaso added, saying “I can truly say that we worked as a team, which made the experience all the more memorable. After all, this is what Dreams+Teams is all about: fulfilling one dream as one team. PHOTO GALLERY:
