The Outreach Core of SY 2008-2009 works on Benedictine
Leadership
with Ms. Malou Cura as the facilitator
The annual Leadership Training Seminar (LTS) of the Outreach Student
Core held last May 31 and June 1, 2008 at Mendez Farm, Silang Cavite
was participated in by 15 members of the Outreach Core. The seminar
had sessions focusing on team building (with Ms. Mary Ann Cruz),
raising social awareness (Ms. Wilma Cabandi), facilitatating skills
(Ms. Sheila Lening), and on concept paper making and minute taking
(Ms. Yasmin Rodriguez).
The day started with the Tissue Wrap
challenge facilitated by Ms. Mary Ann Cruz. The challenge is to have all the
members, who were wrapped with tissue paper and some of whom were assigned
to act with disabilities tried to wear the slippers that had been scattered
around the room. Even though the group failed to accomplish the task
successfully, they were able to gain insights about team relationships.
This group activity was then followed by the viewing of Phil Agenda, a GMA
7 documentary, and the Smokey Mountain documentary made by the HS teachers.
Both documentaries showed different societal concerns. Ms. Cabandi, the
former assistant Outreach Coordinator, facilitated the discussion as she
tried to open the eyes of the students to the reality that they have to face
as members of the Outreach Core.
Ms. Sheila Lening, the Outreach
coordinator, then proceeded on presenting the basic skills needed by the
core members to facilitate outreach-related meetings during the year. This
was then followed by the members’ brainstorming and formulation of the goal
of the Outreach Core, which reads: “The Outreach Core (OC) is the
implementing arm of the Tanggapan ng Kalinga’s socially-oriented activities
geared towards the spirit of volunteerism and active involvement of the
Scholastican community.” The night ended with a solidarity celebration
organized by Janel Gatdula and Kim Rodriguez, both members of the OC.
The second day started with a prayer led
by Ms. Rosanna Ordoņez, the Assistant Outreach Coordinator. Ms. Yasmin
Rodriguez then gave a lecture-workshop on concept paper making and minute
taking. The day’s activities were capped by Mrs. Malou Cura’s team building
activities and talk on Scholastican leadership.
The LTS was a milestone in building the
students’ character for it marked the beginning of a new family. The new OC
who, imbued with true Benedictine service, will work together in effecting
changes towards the transformation to a just and equitable society.
