SSC administrators and lay partners in Aklan Relief Operation with the affected families of the typhoon Frank

Last July 7, 2008, Sr. M. Angelica Leviste, OSB, President of St. Scholastica’s College, Manila, recognizing the plight of the victims of typhoon Frank, appealed to the Scholastican community for donation of goods.  The community responded when representatives of the various units brought their donations as their offering during the holy mass celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the school, St. Benedict last July 11.  A total of eighty-eight (88) sacks of rice, 250 boxes of assorted commodities which include canned goods, noodles, coffee, sugar, soy sauce, salt, mineral water, matches, soap, monggo beans, and old clothes had been gathered.  Cash donations were also collected.

A relief team headed by the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Sr. Mary Thomas Prado, OSB and the Institutional Campus Minister, Sr. Angeline Arceo, OSB was created for the relief operations.  The Benedictine Sisters then formed a team composed of Ms. Ellen Carbon (Associate Dean of Student Affairs), Ms. Juanita Arrosa (Social Action Center Staff), Mr. Federico Lachica (Grade School faculty), Mr. Arnel Daliva (High School faculty), Mr. Marlon Delupio (College faculty) and Mrs. Vida Pamatian (High School parent).

The team members then sorted and packed the relief goods and shipped them through Air 21.  The team flew to Aklan on July 19 and distributed the goods to 41 families residing near a fish pond in Makato, Aklan and 30 families in the vicinity of the coastal area in Numancia, Aklan.  Extra relief goods were turned over to the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Aklan through Fr. Saoro David and Fr. Wilmar.  The team returned to Manila on July 20 with joy in their hearts for the relief operation turned out to be truly a realization of the school’s theme: Go SSC, Go to Serve Others, Save the Earth, and Seek Peace and Pursue It.
