Students discussing
their strategies for the Fashion Co. and Investment Game
Club officers of the High School unit gathered for the annual
Leadership Training Seminar (LTS) held last July 5, 2008 at the Sr.
Kuniberta Hall. This year’s activities focused on Interpersonal
Communication in which all officers went through activities that
would help them become more effective student leaders. After the
LTS, the participants came out better equipped to deal with their
club members and problems.
The Student Council-sponsored activity provided the officers with games
which helped them realized their duties and responsibilities as officers.
Facilitated and graded by three Ateneans, Chris, Rose and Kara, all
officers participating in the games faced the challenging tasks prepared for
them. Students were presented with three challenging tasks, namely: Crossing
Over, Digital Communication and The Fashion Co. (Investment).
The “Crossing Over” game had the objective of switching all the members of
one group with members of another group without going out of the designated
area. The next round had the same objective but some were given
disabilities. Once again, Scholasticans showed their skills by finishing the
task within a record time. This activity taught students to work together
and think of effective solutions quickly.
The next task dubbed as “Digital Communication” required participants to
pass a message, which was a real number and do it without talking. Students
once again showed their prowess in planning strategies and thought of
different ways to effectively pass the number, others worked but others did
not. This activity emphasized the importance of effective oral
communication within the group to avoid misunderstanding.
The last task was a larger version of Tic-Tac-Toe called “The Fashion Co.,
An Investment Game”. Perhaps, this was one where the officers got the most
insight for the activity taught them that instead of having a win/win
situation; most groups chose to pull down each other. In the end, only one
group out of the three, succeeded in winning through working together and
doing the right thing.
After all the activities, we could say that the club officers were equipped
with the skills needed to lead their clubs well. In completing the LTS,
these students leaders, some new, some old, all improved in their
communication skills.
