June 20, 2008, Friday.  Typhoon "Frank" first hit Samar and traveled northwest over the islands of the Philippines. "Frank" brought strong gusts and heavy downpour in the provinces of Visayas and Luzon, particularly the Bicol Region, Metro Manila, Samar, Leyte, Quezon, Mindoro and Negros provinces, Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Romblon, Polillo Island, Marinduque, Burias Island and other nearby provinces.

On June 23, "Frank" left for China, after causing severe destruction in the country.  The lashing rain brought by Frank caused flooding and mudslides in different areas in the country. At least 598 people were reported killed by the typhoon and with several missing. The MV Princess of the Stars, a ferry owned by Sulpicio Lines, sank in Sibuyan Island which caused the death of many people. A nearby reservoir that ruptured sent 30, 000 people onto their rooftops in Iloilo City.  About 200,000 people, on the other hand, in the Bicol region, had to find temporary shelters as the typhoon wiped out their houses.  As "Frank" passed through Metro Manila and other nearby provinces, it brought widespread brownout which lasted for hours. A lot of people were dead, missing or injured.  Many families suddenly became homeless. The typhoon also brought havoc to schools, farmlands, infrastructures, fishing boats and other districts.

Scholasticans' labor of love

It has been a Scholastican way of life to reach out to other people and thus, help those in need.  Because of the losses and damages that Frank caused in the country, any little act of kindness of giving even just a small amount of money for donation would surely help the people who were greatly affected. On June 25, the unit’s High School Principal, Sr. Michaela Manalang, OSB announced through the PA system her appeal for any amount or kind of donation for the Sibuyan Island victims to be collected from every class and be shipped right away to those in need.  The collected donations from each class were handed over to the Tanggapan ng Kalinga during recess, lunch breaks and dismissal hours. The total donation raised by the campaign amounted to Php5813.85 and US$1.  The drive also was able to collect goods such as clothes and canned goods. All the collected donations were coursed through the office of the Mother Prioress of Manila, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB, (in cooperation with the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines [AMRSP]), and through Ms. Mary Ann Rafols of the Guidance Office, (in coordination with Bishop Broderick Pabillo, head of the National Secretariat for Social Action [NASSA]).  The outpouring of donations shows that indeed, a Scholastican has a great heart for people in need especially when disasters or calamities take place in our country.
