   The glorious moment

“For every meeting, we were able to rehearse only a page of the piece.”  This was Isabel de Leon’s reply when asked of how she felt as the Glee Club president, regarding the 21-paged contest piece, Bagbagto.

With the difficult contest piece “ Bagbagto” coupled with a good roster of high school choirs competing, the SSC High School Glee Club still emerged as the champion for the much anticipated finals night of the 2008 CMLI Voices in Harmony Choir Competition held last November 29, 2008 at the Crossroad 77 Convenarium,  Quezon City.  This victory caps the 10th cycle of the competition organized by the Children’s Museum and Library Inc. Junior Council Alumni Association in association with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.

Glee, all smiles for their prize money

The Finals Night highlighted the ten (10) competing high school choral groups which passed the elimination round held last September 20, 2008 at the Philam Life Theatre.  The schools who made it to the finals were the Lourdes School of Quezon City, St. James Academy Malabon, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, St. Paul College Pasig, St. Paul College Parañaque, Miriam College High School, PAREF Woodrose School, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina and St. Theresa’s College QC.

The judges for the competition were Mr. Francisco Feliciano, Mr. John August Pamintuan, Ms. Maria Lourdes Hermo, Mr. Ed Manguait and Ms. Anna Tabita Abeleda, all high caliber composers and choir conductors recognized not just in the Philippines but around the world.

The SSC Glee Club inspired by the world class vocal training of Dr. Carl Elmore Facto managed to endure the tedious late night rehearsals. Guest percussionists Michelle Yu and Andrea Acevedo from the Kapatid Music Ministry also joined the group to further complete the winning roster of the Glee Club.

Posing with the Aria-CMLI roving trophy

When the SSC HS Glee Club performed on the stage, the audience remained silent as the young ladies dazzled them with “Muntik na Kitang Minahal” popularized by The Company, made them laugh with “Tilianan” by Mr. John August Pamintuan and created a lasting impact through “Bagbagto” composed by Mr. Nilo B. Alcala.  Each performance reflected the dedication and eagerness of every choir member giving the judges a hard time to decide on the ranking. Suspense was felt during the break, interviews with choir representatives and introduction of judges. Glee Club members bowed their heads in silent prayer while the organizers announced the winners.   Third place went to Miriam College and second place to St. Paul College, Pasig. When St. Scholastica’s College, Manila Glee Club was announced as the CMLI Voices in Harmony 2008 Champion, the Scholastican singers ran down from the balcony to the stage, jumped for joy and looked up to Him in thankful pause.  The champions sang Bagbagto as they received their gold medals, a plaque, a prize of P30,000.00 and the roving trophy, Aria-fruits of all the challenges they have surpassed with God’s guidance.

Indeed, with this success, in all the Glee Club's future endeavors, God may be glorified!
