As 8th time champion of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) cheerleading competition last February 2009, the St. Scholastica's College Pep Squad composed of Kris Ina Buenagua, Karl Ica Buenagua, April Romelyn Bernal, Toni Ann Nebreja, and Erika Loise Lopez with their coach Mr. Arlou Catalan and moderator Prof. Encar Deveraturda participated in the 3rd CHEERLEADING ASIA INTERNATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS held in Tokyo, Japan last May May 16-17, 2009.

The team represented not only St. Scholastica's College, Manila but Team Philippines in the all-girls partner stunts category together with the UP Squad who also represented the country in group and mixed stunts categories.

Twenty-four (24) Japan teams and three (3) International Teams competed in the preliminary round and out of 27 teams only 12 teams competed in the final round including SSC and UP Pep Squad.

The competition was very enriching to the members of the SSC Pep Squad.  The coming together and rich interaction among the young athletes of Asia offered a fine opportunity for mutual understanding and building ties of trust.  In the International Cheerleading Competition, the student competitors learned that cheerleading means supporting other teams by cheering and chanting the cheers of other teams to boost their confidence.  They learned that as cheerleaders, they could bring joy and hope to other nations especially in these difficult time when most countries including Japan are in recession.  This orientation has yet to be internalized in cheerleading competition in the Philippines.

With a united team spirit, the SSC Pep Squad gave their best performance not only for the school but for the country as well.  The Scholastican community is very proud of its Scions, the SSC Pep Squad!
