Dr. Richard Pulmones, SSC Director of Institutional Research and Academic Development (IRAD) Office, conducted a seminar entitled, “Test Construction, Item Analysis and Alternative Assessment” sponsored by the Association of Benedictine Schools (ABS) last May 18, 2009 from 8:00am-5:00pm at St. Peter's College (SPC), Ormoc City.  The seminar assembled academicians from the three (3) member schools of the Tertiary Commission of ABS.  ABS Executive Director Sr. Celine Saplala, OSB, SPC College faculty and ten (10) SSC HS faculty participated in the event.

In the outset, the participants declared the need to sharpen the pedagogical skills of teachers present.  The seminar started with participants of “empty cups.”  Dr. Pulmones' eloquent articulation of the principles and methods of test and measurement, coupled with his contagious passion for the subject easily drew out enthusiastic response from his audience.  He was able to underscore the importance of Test and Measurement as a pedagogical tool by quoting Star Trek: “If all possibilities have been eliminated, the one that remains must be true.”  The significance of this principle was in the fact, that , if the validity and reliability of a test had been ascertained to be thoroughly fulfilled, and students post low scores on a test, the only logical conclusion is that the test is faulty.

The seminar likewise enlightened the participants on the importance of educational measurement tools not only as indexes of student learning and performance but more so as the benchmark of teaching effectiveness.

The open forum at the end of the seminar allowed the participants to fill each other's cup of knowledge.  Truly, the event was able to sharpen the participants' pedagogical saws to brilliant shine ready for the coming school year.
