Ms. Karen Camille Gutierrez, who graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 with a  degree in AB Mass Communication minor in Broadcast Journalism, was one of the participants in “The 3rd Pandayang Lino Brocka Political Film and New Media Festival,” which was held last August 10 and 11, 2011 at the University of the Philippines Film Center.

The said event was organized by Tudla Productions in partnership with the U.P. Film Institute, and is supported by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

The Pandayang Lino Brocka Political Film and New Media Festival is a cultural gathering of a new generation of students and amateur filmmakers as well as independent ones who see themselves following the footsteps of the late great Lino Brocka, National Artist for Film in 1992 and one of country’s most respected filmmakers.

Jessamin Montuya, Project Director of Pandayang Lino Brocka says that “the festival aims to inspire the creation and popularization of truthful, artistic and socially relevant audiovisual works to enlighten and to cultivate critical consciousness of the mass audience.”

Twelve films, a collection of documentaries, short films and poetry in motion, were selected to illustrate this year’s festival theme – Nationalism.

Ms. Gutierrez’s official entry is entitled “Aktibista, a documentary film which recounts the story of Axel Pinpin, a Filipino activist who was arrested and tortured during the Arroyo regime.

The Festival aims to turn more schools, urban poor communities, workplaces, and even underprivileged peasant communities into partners in order to reach a wider audience.  This is because the Festival and its organizers believes that, with the right amount of encouragement, a lot more of these aspiring and independent film makers will be given the chance to display their creative flair and commendable taste in relevant films.
