St. Benedict

"The community which has neither poverty nor riches will always have the noblest principles. (Plato)"

The entire SSC community was one in spirit as it celebrated the solemnity of St. Benedict last July 11, 2012 in the SSC field from 7:45 to 9:00AM with Rev. Fr. Anselm Manalastas, OSB, as the mass presider.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Manalastas highlighted the virtues espoused by St. Benedict himself: community and hospitality which are the focus for schoolyear 2012-2013. Fr. Manalastas explained the importance of community in that "one can be holy as one lives in community." In relation to hospitality, Rev. Fr. Manalastas shared the story of a teenager named Bill and emphasized that people must "bring each other closer to God by their warmth." He added that no one has the monopoly of beauty so that everyone should be kind and friendly and treat others with respect regardless of their color, creed or status in life. He cited St. Benedict and St. Scholastica as epitomes of hospitality.

Ms. Becky Marquez, as the mass lay leader, acknowledged the following people for their contribution to the success of the celebration of the feastday: Rev. Fr. Manalastas, the sisters of the Priory House community, the School of Music (Sr. Mary Placid Abejo, Prof. Monette Balingcos, and Prof. Greg Zuniga for the choir and accompaniment), the readers, altar servers, cross and candle bearers, offerors, mass collectors, communion guides, and the General Services, AVC, and OP/PS personnel. Special thanks were also expressed to the members of the community who graciously helped and donated commodities to the people of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur: the Grade School students for slippers, the High School students for umbrellas, and the College students for school supplies. The spirit of community and hospitality will always remain in the hearts of the Scholastican community.

At the conclusion of the mass, Rev. Fr. Manalastas requested everyone to pray for an increase in the Benedictine vocation.
