● Provides alternative education on a wide range of topics to women, especially those from the grassroots, to enhance self-awareness and encourage concern for women’s equality; ● Trains women toward becoming effective organizers and advocates of women’s rights. The Seminar and Training Program has both a curricular and an outreach component. 1. The main course offered at the institutional level is the Women’s Studies Program of St. Scholastica’s College, which includes: ● An Introductory Course on Women’s Studies – overview of feminist theory and the women’s question. ● Cognate Course on Women’s Studies – core subjects and electives concentrating on areas such as patriarchy, current women’s issues, socializing forces and the women’s movement. 2. The three-week Trainer's Training Course is designed for facilitators of seminars on women’s issues and organizing. It covers pedagogical and facilitative skills needed to be able to conduct alternative education for women. 3. The Program offers the two-month Intercultural Course on Women and Society yearly. The course gathers women from Asia and the Pacific as well as few participants from other regions, to share experiences and ideas or issues that affect women’s situation and participation in community life The Program offers the two-month Intercultural Course on Women and Society yearly. The course includes exposure visits to women’s communities and groups, action-research presentations, and intensive curricular studies on subjects like Feminist Theories, Gender and Development, Women and Religion, Feminist Research, and Feminist Processes in Education. 4. Special short-term courses are
also offered, including: Materials Development and Publications Program ● Conducts and publishes research on women for use in formal and popular feminist education ● Serves as venue for feminist literary writings The Institute of Women’s Studies ventured into publishing from the outset, having realized the lack of books and other materials on women made by Filipinos. Since then, the Materials Development Program (formerly Research and Publications Program) has published a variety of materials on women by women. The Women’s Study Series is composed of anthologies now used by the different schools in the country offering women’s studies courses. The titles in the series include Essays on Women (general) Women and Religion and Sarilaya: Women in the Arts and Media. The Program has published research on such topics as the dynamics of Filipino family life, the political economy of gender, and incest. Resource Center Development Program ● Provides access to books, documents, audio-visual materials on women; ● Develops a documentation center on women in Philippine history; and ● Collects information and materials relevant to training, advocacy and campaign on women's issues Initially created to provide support to the Institute’s own programs as well as to the women’s studies courses of St. Scholastica’s College, the Resource Center now services students and teachers of other schools in Metro Manila, in addition to staff of women’s organizations. The Center specializes in women’s studies and religion. The Center’s print collection exceeds 1,000 titles, including some 50 periodicals. The audio-visual materials range in scope from documentaries on indigenous women to contemporary films that explore women’s relationships. |
