Economics Organization Week
by Nicole A. Martir and Lyra Dianne P. Garcia

The Economics Organization (EconOrg) held its annual organization week last September 26-30, 2005 with the theme “Surging Towards Economic Progress Through Scholastican Education and Benedictine Service.”  It aimed to provide students with the understanding of the importance of economics in our world today, focusing more on the economic situation of our country.  In line with this objective, the EconOrg prepared various activities including an exhibit at the Amrhein Gallery, lecture series, eco-know-mics quiz bee, symposium on agrarian reform, roundtable discussion, participation as audience

Lecture series speaker Mr. Kenyon Chee talked about the role of economics in decision making.  Mr. Chee shared his insights with the students on what to expect after graduation.  He also gave tips on how to succeed and advance in the corporate ladder by upholding values like respect for other people and to never stop learning new things.  Department of Agrarian Reform Director Hugo Yonzon, III discussed curriculum development.  A roundtable discussion at the Maryville Study Hall followed the lecture series.

Students taking up Principles of Economics were challenged during the eco-know-mics quiz bee.  The debate held on September 29, 2005 with the topic “ang mga tutol kay Arroyo, ginigipit nga ba?” served as a venue for students to ventilate their views on the present political situation in the country.

The success of the activity was attributed to the hard work rendered by the officers, organization members/non-members and support of its moderator Dr. Ruben Nayve, Jr.  It is now the primary objective of the organization to continue its plans for the rest of the school year and promote Benedictine values through its activities.  The event was sponsored by Boy Bawang and the Manila Water Company.  n
