SSC Grade School Faculty
Pays Tribute to Mrs. Florina F. Castillo
by Ms. Mariefe Beltran and Ms. Amelia Perez

Mrs. Florina F. Castillo

On July 16, 2004, the Grade School Faculty of  St. Scholastica's College, Manila, threw a party to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of Mrs. Florina F. Castillo, the unit's retiring head.  A short prayer service, simple merienda and a program were held in the presence of S. Josefina Nepomuceno, OSB, SSC President and Prof. Naty Crame-Rogers.

The celebration was held at the Sr. Kuniberta Hall, amidst the heavy rains and claps of thunder outside.  Each grade level presented improvised prayers addressed to the honoree.  During the

program, the teachers underscored Mrs. Castillo's unfolding - from a simple seventh grader to becoming an accomplished educator and innovator.  Some of her most applauded projects were innovations on learning modules: Search for the Filipino, Peace Week, Peace Congress, Peace Camp; the Small Group Prescribed Instruction with Individual Pacing (SGPIIP) and the Drama and Theater in Education (DTIE) approaches to instruction and such concepts as "Catching the Moment", "The Pedagogy of Presence", and "In Touch with the Masters".

In response, Mrs. Castillo recited a haiku she had composed for the whole faculty.

HAIKU
by Florina F. Castillo

Yes, yes, yes, Sweetheart, yes
When the rains come
I shall begin again

I am home now
and the rains have come
Yes, I shall begin again
