Two faculty and twenty-nine (29) students attended the 8th
National Conference of the Council of Economics Educators (CECON)
and 3rd National Convention of Philippine Council of
Economics Students (PhilCES), respectively at Crown Hotel in Naga
City on November 24-26, 2004.
This year's conference theme focused
on "Integrating Health |
Economics into
the Economics Curriculum". Hon. Jesse M. Robredo, mayor of
Naga City and multi-awarded local official on public service was
the keynote speaker. Other invited speakers include Drs.
Ofelia S. Sy, President, Philippine College of Physician, Bicol
Chapter and Claro Mandayag, Provincial Health Team Leader,
province of Camarines Sur and Dr. Ruben M. Nayve, Jr. representing
the academe, Chairman Emeritus, CECON and former Chairperson of
St. Scholastica's College Economics Department.

Dr. Nayve delivered a paper during the national conference
held on November 24, 2004. His paper was entitled
"Designing an Appropriate Health Economics Program Consistent
with Private and Public Sectors' Requirements." Dr.
Nayve explained the need to integrate Health Economics into
the Economic curriculum to provide awareness among the people
through the help of Economic faculty and students.
Furthermore, to respond to the deteriorating health condition
of the Filipinos because of poor public health care
expenditures and increasing cost of private health care.
As an output of his paper, he presented a sample course
outline in Health Economics.
The course outline will be submitted to the Commission on
Higher Education as part of CECON advocacy to improve
Economics curriculum in the country. |

The national meeting was participated by faculty and students from
various schools, colleges and universities from Luzon, Visayas and
National Capital Region. Other than St. Scholastica's
College, other delegates were coming from UST, PUP, FEU, San Beda
College. Quezon City Science High School, Divine Word
College of Calapan, St. Louis University, DLSU-Dasmariņas, Palawan
State University, Camarines Sur Agricultural State College, Naga
College Foundation, Divine Word College of Legaspi, Aquinas
University, University of St. La Salle and the host school,
University of Nueva Caceres.
