The Grade 7 students visited Quiapo, Bahay Nakpil, Fort Santiago and Intramuros on January 19, 2005.  The educational field trip aimed to introduce the learners to the significance of these historical places in molding the country’s history and culture.

The students first visited Bahay Nakpil Museum.  It is on the same house where Gregoria de Jesus, the wife of Andres Bonifacio, once lived.  The Spanish-inspired house boasts of its fine architectural design and

craftsmanship.  The hosts taught the students the classic art of making decorative pastilla wrappers.

The next destination of the students was the Quiapo Church also known as The Basilica of the Nazareno.  The group was awed to see the intricate art works designed by Filipinos.  They prayed and were ushered in at the back of the altar to observe with the devotees the tradition of kissing the feet of the Nazareno.  Beside the church are the famous Plaza Miranda and the Quinta Market.

The students had their lunch at Fort Santiago.  They retraced the footsteps of our National Hero Dr. Jose

Rizal and offered a short prayer for the Filipinos who were tortured and died in the dungeons of Fort Santiago.  Their next stop was the Rizaliana Furniture Collection at the Baluarte de Sta. Barbara, then to the Rizal Shrine.  The students also had a glimpse of the San Agustin Church, one of UNESCO’s Heritage Sites in the world.  The last leg of the trip was Casa Manila where students had a glimpse of the lifestyle of the rich families during the Spanish era.

The entire trip was exhausting but truly learning-made-fun experience for the students.  Through this activity, they were able to appreciate more their country’s heritage and traditions which will remain in their hearts and minds as young
Filipinos.
