Celebrate literacy!
by Ma. Louisa D. Joaquin

The English Language Arts teachers of the Grade School Unit headed by
Mrs. Leonila G. Cabrera, Reading Coordinator and Mrs. Marian L. Nonaillada, Language Arts Coordinator attended a workshop entitled "Building and Celebrating Literacy in the Elementary Schools" on September 23, 2004 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Dr. Linda Warfel, Vice-President of Education and Trade of Scholastic-Asia
was the speaker of the said workshop.  She emphasized that building literacy is a complex goal that requires continuous positive reinforcement for success.  Teachers need to carefully balance the four areas of development in Communication Arts,
i.e., listening, speaking, reading and writing.

She posed the challenge to teachers to become advocates of reading and look for more ways of motivating both reluctant and emergent readers because some lessons can "drill and kill" the students' interest in reading literacy.  Thus, it is the task of teachers to "fulfill and thrill" an interest in reading literacy to be able to truly build and celebrate a reading culture in our schools and society.

The workshop also covered developing phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, levelling books, and guided reading using a variety of reading genre.
It was sponsored by Scholastic-Asia and co-sponsored by Books for Less.
